This football stadium began construction in 2011, following the demolition of the previous Machadão stadium and has been built for the 2014 World Cup. The stadium opened on 26 January 2014.
The design of the stadium is intended to resemble sand dunes, which are one of the most famous natural features of the Natal region of Brazil. The name of the stadium, translated from Portuguese, is "Dunes Arena". The stadium has a capacity for approximately 40,000 people.
Natal is located in northeast Brazil, on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The city has an estimated population of 1 million. It is a popular destination for tourists, due to its warm climate and beaches.
Natal was said to be founded on 25 December 1599 and gained its name from this date; Natal means "Nativity" or "Christmas" in Portuguese.
