First images from Himawari-8
At 02:40 UTC on 18 December 2014, the first images from all 16 bands were captured by JMA's Himawari-8 next-generation geostationary meteorological satellite, which was launched on 7 October 2014.
Testing and checking of the Himawari-8 system, including related ground facilities, are going well. Himawari-8 is scheduled to start operation in mid-2015.
JMA has released the first images acquired by the satellite, from each of the 16 bands the satellite operates in. The image featured below is a true-colour composite of the first three bands, and shows the Eastern Hemisphere.
Underneath the swirling clouds, Australia is the most visible location in this image, standing out as an island of orange amidst the blue at the bottom of the image.
