This UK-DMC2 image, acquired 20 May 2013, shows the city and region of Orenburg, in Russia.

The Ural River can be clearly seen in this image. Its ancient name was Yaik and it was renamed by the order of the Empress Catherine II in 1775. Ural is the third longest river in Europe after the Volga and Danube Rivers.

The tributary of the Ural River - the Sakmara river - can be seen in the upper right corner of the image. It is very popular among water tourists.

The city of Orenburg is located at the confluence of the Sakmara and Ural Rivers. Over half a million people live in the city.
