Tropical Cyclone Lam
Image of Tropical Cyclone Lam captured by the AVHRR instrument onboard EUMETSAT's MetOp-B polar-orbiting satellite on Monday 19 February 2015, 00:16 (UTC).
Cyclone Lam made landfall in the Northern Territory of Australia on 20 February and caused heavy damage to the region but no serious injuries. The storm was at Category Four strength when it made landfall, but weakened after its arrival.
Lam tore the roofs off houses, knocked down trees and damaged power lines and communications in its path. The storm also caused high tides and some coastal flooding in the state.
On the same day, Cyclone Marcia was also striking Australia in Queensland, the state which borders the Northern Territory, causing similar damage there.
In this image we can see Lam on approach to the coast of Australia shortly before landfall.
