This Pleiades image, acquired on 04 June 2014, shows the floating city of Venice, in Italy.
The City of Water (one of Venice's many names) is built upon 117 small islands in the Venetian Lagoon, each of them connected by a total of 409 bridges. Many vessels can be seen passing in and around Venice in this image.
Approximately 60,000 people live in Venice, and 270,000 live in the Venetian commune as a whole.
At the top-right of the image is the island of Murano. This neighbouring island has a long history of glass making, ever since Venice moved its glass making industry to the island in the 13th Century. The Murano glass makers became so well-renowned by the following century that they were some of the most influential people in the state of Venice.
