Minimize Kazan City, third capital of Russia

This image of Kazan City was acquired by the SPOT-5 satellite on 12 December 2012.

Kazan - the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan - is a large port on the left bank of the Volga River. It is one of the most important economic, political and cultural centres in Russia.

A Volga feeder - the Kazanka River - splits the city in two parts: historical (southern) and modern (northern). Two parts of the city are connected with five dikes and bridges and with a metro line, which links seven metro stations.

The history of Kazan extends back over a thousand years. The Kazan Kremlin, featuring a combination of Orthodox and Islamic grounds, is included in UNESCO's World Heritage Sites list.
