Onega District, Russia
This image of the Onega District of Arkhangelsk Region in Russia was acquired on 18 February by the SPOT 5 satellite.
The Onega Bay - the gulf of the White Sea south-west of Arkhangelsk, in which Onega River falls (bottom left), as well Kem', Keret and Vyg rivers - can be seen on the image.
The seaport Onega town with over 20,000 residents is located on the banks of the Onega River. It is included in the list of towns of the Far North.
And the small Kiy island can be seen 10 km away from the Onega River estuary, with Onega Monastery, founded in 1656 by patriarch Nikon.
