The Department of Geography at King's College London wish to appoint a Research Associate to work on the collaborative exploitation, evaluation, validation and potentially derivation of Earth Observation products to support improved forecasting of crop pests and diseases, in both China and sub-Saharan Africa.
The post will work across two projects, funded by the Newton Fund and the UK Space Agency International Partnerships Programme, the latter being a 5-year project. A key parameter of interest is Land Surface Temperature (LST), derived primarily from geostationary but also polar-orbiting satellites. Work will commence by testing existing LST products delivered by Space Agencies against "ground-truth" data, and subsequent work could include estimation of LST at times of cloud cover, where for example use of surface energy balance models may be required, and separate characterisation of canopy and soil temperatures. Work on field validation will also be important, with the ultimate aim being to input the validated EO data streams into crop pest and disease forecasting models being developed by other partners in the consortia.
Candidates are not necessarily expected to have prior experience in all parts of the work, but should be knowledgeable and technically skilled on some aspects. The successful applicant will be expected to start within 3 months of being offered the post.
This is a PhD level role but candidates who will have submitted their thesis by the time of their appointment and are awaiting PhD viva/award will be considered for interview. Application deadline is midnight on 24 May 2017, with interviews expected within 2 weeks. The appointment will be for 2 years in the first instance, with the potential for extension.
