NASA and JAXA launch new satellite to measure global rain and snow

The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory, a joint Earth-observing mission between NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), thundered into space at 1:37 p.m. EST Thursday, 27 February (3:37 a.m. JST Friday, 28 February) from Japan.

This area is part of the northern zone of the Andean Volcanic Belt. The belt was formed as a result of the Nazca and Antarctic tectonic plates moving under the South American plate – a geological process called ‘subduction’.

China pushing ahead on hi-res satellite system

China's push into high-resolution optical Earth observation through its seven-satellite CHEOS system is slightly delayed but will see the launch of a second satellite this year and three more satellites by 2016, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) said.

Real-time forecast of Hurricane Sandy had track and intensity accuracy

A real-time hurricane analysis and prediction system that effectively incorporates airborne Doppler radar information may accurately track the path, intensity and wind force in a hurricane, according to Penn State meteorologists. This system also can identify the sources of forecast uncertainty.

German-Korean industrial team to build KOMPSAT-6 radar imager

The high-resolution imaging radar for South Korea's KOMPSAT-6 Earth observation satellite will be built by LIG Nex1 Co. Ltd. of Korea and Airbus Defence and Space's German arm under a contract announced 26 February.

Conference Overview:

FRIAR 2014 is the fourth Conference of this successful series. When flooding occurs in populated areas, it can cause substantial damage to property as well as threatening human life. In addition, many more people must endure the homelessness, upset and disruption that are left in the wake of floods. The increased frequency of flooding in the last few years, coupled with climate change predictions and urban development, suggest that these statistics are set to worsen in the future. How we respond and adapt to these challenges is key to developing our long term resilience at the property, community and city scale.

The conference provides a forum for researchers, academics and practitioners actively involved in improving our understanding of flood events and our approaches to response, recovery and resilience. The meeting will bring together social scientists, surveyors, engineers, scientists, and other professionals from many countries involved in research and development activities in a wide range of technical and management topics related to flooding and its impacts on communities, property and people.
