News of the week
A Japanese satellite equipped with a sharp-eyed synthetic aperture radar launched Saturday on a mission to map the globe every two weeks, helping authorities respond to natural disasters, track agricultural yields and monitor shipping lanes.
Earth Observation Missions
Lockheed Martin Commercial Launch Services (LMCLS) will launch the WorldView-3 commercial remote sensing spacecraft, placing it into orbit on 13 August for DigitalGlobe, a leading provider of commercial high-resolution earth observation and advanced geospatial solutions.
Research and Applications
New research has provided scientists with greater insight into the climatic changes happening in the upper atmosphere. Scientists found that changes in the Earth's magnetic field are more relevant for climatic changes in the upper atmosphere (about 100-500 km above the surface) than previously thought.

This planned Digital Earth Summit will focus on how Digital Earth technology and activities has contributed or will contribute to ESD (Education for Sustainable Development). Digital Earth technology is one of the key technologies to support ESD by visualising the complicated earth system, social system, not only for the current situation but from past to future.
Digital Earth is a global initiative to construct a comprehensive virtual representation of the planet. It is a collaborative effort between Earth sciences, space sciences and information sciences to monitor and forecast natural and human phenomena.
EO Missions Database
Visit the eoPortal database to find out about spaceborne EO missions and sensors to discover more about past, operational and future missions. This is complemented with detailed articles of airborne sensors.
This database is based on the book of Herbert J. Kramer Observation of the Earth and its Environments and describes over 600 missions in detail. Online updated version of "Earth Observation History of Technical Introduction" available as of January 02, 2017.
