A volcano comes to life - satellite picture of Bardarbunga on Iceland

Bardarbunga, (Bárðarbunga) in Iceland, one of the largest volcanoes in Europe and located beneath the biggest glacier in Europe, became active again in mid-August. The German Earth observation satellite TerraSAR-X has now provided important data on the volcano's latest activity.

Algorithm tested aboard the International Space Station analyses the rotation of objects in space

Objects in space tend to spin - and spin in a way that's totally different from the way they spin on Earth. Understanding how objects are spinning, where their centres of mass are, and how their mass is distributed is crucial to any number of actual or potential space missions, from cleaning up debris in the geosynchronous orbit favoured by communications satellites to landing a demolition crew on a comet.

ADM-Aeolus Science and Cal/Val Workshop

Workshop Overview:

The objective of this workshop is to bring scientists and Cal/Val Principle Investigators (PI) together at ESA to present and discuss the upcoming ADM-Aeolus mission and products, science applications and Calibration and Validation aspects.

A motivation is to allow Cal/Val Principal Investigators to get familiar with the mission, and to meet and coordinate their efforts in contributing to the mission validation. The Workshop shall in that respect largely contribute to the detailing of the Cal/Val Implementation Plan.

Furthermore, the scientific community are invited to present their plans for the use of the Aeolus data and to start getting familiar with the expected products and product quality.
