Landsat 8 marks five years in orbit

In its five years in space, the Landsat 8 Earth-observing satellite has racked up some impressive statistics: 26,500 orbits around the planet, 1.1 million "scenes" captured, a motherlode of images that represents 16 percent of all the observations in the 45-year Landsat archive.

Wind satellite survives vacuum

ESA's Aeolus satellite has been particularly tricky to build. One of the main stumbling blocks has been getting its lasers to work in a vacuum, but recent tests on the satellite show that the vacuum or temperature of space won't get in the way of Aeolus measuring Earth's winds.

Copernicus Sentinel-3 soon to be in tandem

The Sentinel-3B satellite scheduled for launch this spring, will be flying 30 seconds apart from its twin, Sentinel-3A, during the commissioning phase. This temporary tandem arrangement is to obtain better cross-calibration between instruments, thus reducing uncertainties in the multi-satellite time series and ensuring an overall high data quality.

Meeting overview:

The fourth S3VT meeting will take place at EUMETSAT Headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany, in the week of 13-15 March 2018.

The meeting will feature in-depth discussion around the results from the scientific validation of the operational products after 2 years of the Sentinel-3 A mission, and plans and prospects for the calibration and validation for the upcoming Sentinel-3B.

Participation in the S3VT is open under the rolling S3VT Announcement of Opportunity throughout the operational phase of the mission.
