Devastation in Mozambique

Tropical cyclones carry three major threats: winds, storm surge, and rainfall-triggered floods. All three landed devastating blows on Mozambique when Tropical Cyclone Idai came ashore on 15 March, 2019, after taking a sharp turn in the Mozambique Channel a few days earlier. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite captured a false-colour image of the flooding on 21 March, 2019 - the first relatively clear NASA satellite view since Idai hit.

Satellites key to addressing water scarcity

22 March 2019

Today is World Water Day, but with millions of people in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe struggling to cope in the aftermath of Cyclone Idai, the notion of water shortages may not be at the forefront of our minds right now. Even so, floods, like we see here, lead to real problems accessing clean water. Whether the problem is inundation or water scarcity, satellites can help monitor this precious resource.

ARSI and KEO Conference

11 - 13 November 2019

Organisation: ESA and ESTEC

Location: Noordwijk, Netherlands

Abstract deadline: 24 June 2019

Overview:

November 2019 will see the sixth edition of the workshop on "Advanced RF Sensors and Remote Sensing Instruments" organised by ESA/ESTEC. As in previous years, the purpose is to bring together experts from industry and research organisations to share and present their latest findings on RF remote sensing technology, processing and systems.

As was the case at the ARSI'17, the main workshop is being extended to cover the related "Ka-band Earth Observation Radar Missions". This workshop has a similar character to ARSI but concentrates entirely on all aspects related to Ka-band Earth Observation instruments.

The objectives of the two combined workshop are to review the state of the art in current and future mission concepts including applications, science objectives, mission design and instrument technology. This includes new ideas for applications enabled by Ka-band SAR and InSAR. Higher frequency bands may also be considered.

The combined event will take place from 11-13 November 2019 at ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands. Industry, researchers and engineers active in the field are cordially invited to participate and to present their latest findings.
